Camden Market
|
|
Last weekend, we went to Camden Market in Camden Town. Going there via tube, and there it was -Camden Market which is a major youth focused market or shopping district in Camden Town, and the largest shopping area of its type in London, England.
It is a leading tourist attraction which attracts tens of thousands of people a day in the summer, a high proportion of them overseas visitors to the UK. It began in its present form in 1974 when the Camden Lock crafts market was formed, although the traditional local street market in Inverness Street, which has now been absorbed by Camden Market, existed before that. It consists of six separate neighbouring markets:
-Camden Lock Market - the original crafts focused market, established in 1974. Mostly indoors.
-Stables Market - the largest of the markets. Mainly clothes and furniture, plus many other bits and pieces.
-Camden Canal Market - an outdoor market focusing on clothes.
-Buck Street Market - another outdoor market focusing on clothes.
-Electric Ballroom - an indoor market open on Saturdays and Sundays.
-Inverness Street Market - a small traditional street market.
I bought a pair of Dr Martin boots for only 6GBP. Had lunch at a Penang owned Tojimi restaurant - the cook is a Malaysian named Dino. He was previously working at Malaysian Hall before it was closed for renovation. And the food was, fantastic. Ayam masak kicap, ikan goreng pedas, telur sambal, popia goreng etc. It cost us 4.50GBP for any combination of 3 dishes.

Petticoat Lane Sunday Market (Liverpool Street)
|
|
Went to Petticoat Lane Sunday Market yesterday. Collegue of mine (Rohana) did some last minute shopping. Bought some cheap branded off-season garments pricing from 1GBP onwards.
The market is one of a number of traditional markets, lying to the east of the City of London. A few hundred yards to the north is Old Spitalfields market, and across Commercial Street, to the east, lies Brick Lane Market. A half mile further east is the Columbia Road Flower market. Petticoat Lane Market was not formally recognised until an Act of Parliament in 1936, but its long history as an informal market, makes it possibly one of the oldest surviving markets in Britain.
The market is open Monday-to-Friday on Wentworth Street alone, but on Sunday extends over many of the surrounding streets, with over 1000 stalls. It closes on Sundays at about 2pm, and is closed on Saturday. The markets are well signposted from local stations.

Portobello Road Market, Notting Hill Gate
|
|
|
Portobello Road Market is a street market in Portobello Road, in the Notting Hill area of West London, in England. The world-famous part of the market sells antiques and draws many tourists. The main market day for antiques is Saturday. However, there are also many fruit and vegetable stalls in the market, which trade throughout the week and tend to be further north than the antiques. The market began as a fresh-food market in the nineteenth century; antiques dealers arrived in the 1960s.

Weekend at Stoke & Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village
|
|
Last weekend we rent a car at Enterprice and got a Nissan Micra 1.2(A) (Impul in Msia) priced 48GBP for 3 days. We went to pick up the car at Old Kent road near Elephant & Castle. Started our journey to Stoke-on-Trent at 10am going into London, towards north into M1 and M6 highway. It was a 3 hour drive and directions are taken from theaa.com.
Stoke-on-Trent (often abbreviated to Stoke) is a city in Staffordshire in the West Midlands region of England. Since the 17th century the area has been almost exclusively known for its industrial-scale pottery manufacturing, with such world renowned names as Royal Doulton, Spode (founded by Josiah Spode, Wedgwood and Minton (founded by Thomas Minton) being born and based there. The presence locally of abundant supplies of coal and of suitable clay for earthenware production led to the early but at first limited development of the local pottery industry.
The 1st place we went once arrived at Stoke was Wedgwood Factory Shop. It was amazingly cheap & as usual shopping sakan la...just next to Wedgwood is Royal Doulton Factory shop. So again, we went for another shopping spree. Then Zul (Atti's brother) called, we met and went to Trafford Square in Manchester to have our dinner at Nandos. Zul bought a house in Stoke, he stays there with his beloved wife & 2 cute kids. We spent the night at Zul's place and the next day, we went to a car-boot sale in Stoke.
After having lunch at Zul's, off we went to McArthur Glen - Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village which is 45 minutes away from Stoke. It was a huge place, I think they have like 100 factory shops ranging from Next, GAP, M&S, Timberland, Levis, Clarks, Dorethy Perkins, Wedgwood, Nike, Adidas, Puma, etc. It was like a shopping heaven I would say. We started heading home around 6pm after having a shopping blast & arrived in London 11pm.
Thanks to Zul & Family for their help & hospitality.

Last Saturday my wife arrived 6 hours late from the scheduled arrival time. I was at the airport waiting for 6 hours. Went to have dinner at Makan in Ladbroke Grove and went to Primark to buy some stuff. Sunday- we went off to one of the biggest car boot sale in London. It was near Kingston and it took us 30 minutes via train to get there. It was huge and all kind of stuff can be found here...price range from 10p to 100GBP on used & new stuff. Thanks to my friend Roslee & family for their hospitality during our visit to Kingston. Next weekend, scheduled to Royal Dalton & Wedgewood Factory Outlet in Stoke & shopping spree at Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village near Manchester. Cheers!

Today is my 6th day here in London, kinda bz with work. Went to Hammersmith yesterday after work...you can find super store TK Maxx which sells branded designers garments at least 60% off the retail price. And at Primark, you can actually buy a pair of jeans for 6GBP and a polo shirt for 2.50GBP. It was really a bargain. Also heard that garments at Primark comes from the same factory/warehouse as Mark & Spencer.....
Also, moved from Thistle Hotel to Plaza on the River Aparment near Embankment, for the same price, and the new place is like 3 times bigger & confortable.

Business Trip to London 2nd June until 29th June 2007
|
|
Departure via KLIA with 747 Jumbo Jet Bizz Class to London. Direct flight took almost 13 hrs to reached Heathrow terminal 3. The weather was good, 24C and windy. Below are the best way/cheap to travel from airport to central london
Heathrow --> Paddington Station = Heathrow Express cost 15.50GBP
Paddington Station --> Charing Cross tube stn = Underground cost 4.00GBP
For a 1 week unlimited travel pass will cost 23GBP
For a 1 month unlimited travel pass will cost 89GBP
Check in at Thistle Hotel at Charing Cross near Trafalgar Square. The room was nice but rather small. It is abouth 15 min walk from Hotel to Shell Centre which is located in Waterloo, just beside the London Eye & Waterloo tube station is just underneath.
On Sunday, I went to Portobello Road Market in Notthing Hill Gate and also Petticoat Lane Market in Liverpool Street. Various stuff for sale from used item to new ones, but mostly are garments from China or India.
Halal food are mostly available at Edgwere Road, Baker Street, Shepherd Bush and Arsenal. And mostly are in zone 2. There was only 1 proper Indonesia/Malaysian shop called Bali Bali which is located near Convent Garden. The owner of Restoran Mawar (which is now closed due to tenantcy problem) is working here now.
Will update more soon with more pictures....
