Trip to Golok - May 2007

Myself & wifey went to Golok, Naratiwath, Thailand last week...and did some shopping - not so much of it. For those who have not been to Golok, I would suggest that Rantau Panjang is a better place to shop.

2nd Trip to Bandung...what a blast!
|

This is my 2nd trip to Bandung with wife. Stayed there for 5 days. Below are some tips on where to stay, eat and shop in Bandung.
Hotel:
Royal Dago (2) Hotel will cost you RP135,00 (RM54) for standard room or RP155,000 (RM62) for Deluxe room. Its very clean and complete with all the basic stuff you need like TV, hot shower, wardrobe, aircond & housekeeping. It’s the most convenience place to stay because its just a walking distance to almost 10 factory outlets, Mc Donald (24 hrs) and some warungs where you can eat & also buy pirated DVDs for only RP5000 (RM2). You can always call this hotel at 022-2502200 or fax to 022-2500565 for reservation. Make sure you mentioned that you wanna book room at Royal Dago 2, and not Royal Dago 1 (which is much more expensive).
From Airport to Hotel:
Once you arrive at the airport, make sure you go directly to the Taksi counter to get a RP30,000 (RM12) coupon so that you will not get rip-off. And insist the Taksi driver to go directly to the Hotel, rather than browsing around town which will later charge you more.
From Hotel to other places:
You can easily get Angkutan in front of Dago hotel for RP1500 (60 sen) for 1 person per trip. From Dago Hotel you can easily go to Pasar Baru, Chi-Walk or Setiabudi Road via Angkutan. Please make sure that you prepare exact fare for the Angkutan....kekadang dorang ni pun rip-off jugak....
Place to Shop till you drop:
There are like 30 FO (Factory Outlets) in Bandung, and we did not have the time nor energy to go all this FO. Penat beb…..most of the brands that they carry are Abercrombie & Fitch, Future.now, Eddie Bauer, MAG, Nautica, Fendi, Elle, Hugo Boss, DKNY, Espirit, Calvin Klein, Armani, Crocodile, Balley Apostrophe, Alfred Dunhill, Nike, Reebok, Limited, The Gap, Banana Republic, Guess, Tommy Hilfiger, Polo, Adidas, Puma, Ann Taylor, D&G, BCBG, J. Crew, Allure, Bennetton, Cerruti 1881, Victoria's Secret, NY & Company, Sag Harbor, Old Navy, Ocean Pacific, Roxy, Hush Puppy, Versache, Table Eight, Cherokee, Express, Karen Scott and Sears and Mervyn's brands.
These shops used to be called sisa export and are now often called asli-palsu (or real fakes) by Indonesians. In actuality they are factory outlets, which offer overruns and seconds on export garments at bargain prices. The foreign store and foreign currency price tag often is still on the item ... i.e., US$ 65 ... with the Rp price next to it ... Rp 45,000 (US$4.50). The shops carry both Grade A (best quality overruns) and Grade B (seconds with something wrong with them so they didn't pass quality inspection by the buyer). Some also carry factory rejects ... but they wouldn't broadcast that fact! Depending on the agreements between buyers/factories and factory outlets, the items are often put up for sale 3-6 months after they go on the market for full price elsewhere. Don't be surprised if you see 'Made in Korea' or 'Made in Thailand' (to name a few) tags on the clothes too as many of the shops buy from agents who represents factories in these countries. Or, they are really made in Indonesia and mis-labeled on purpose ... ! Local production for the local market is offered in the shops as well ... with very different quality. Buyer beware ... because some of the stores also sell fakes along with the factory seconds. Pasar Baru is also a good place to shop for Batik, Kebaya, Textiles, Ole-ole at a really cheap price compared to Jalan TAR. Its almost 10 times bigger than Jalan TAR.
